Welcome to Kitchener-Waterloo
Kitchener-Waterloo (KW) is one of Ontario's most historically rich and economically vibrant regions, first settled in the early 1800s by Mennonite pioneers from Pennsylvania who began farming along the Grand River, laying the groundwork for what would become a thriving trade and manufacturing hub known as Berlin — home to businesses like Krug Furniture, which has been crafting quality furniture here since 1880. In 1916, residents voted to rename the city Kitchener and the region has continued to grow and reinvent itself ever since. Today, KW blends its agricultural roots — visible at the St. Jacobs Market, the largest open-air market in Canada — with a modern reputation as a leading center for technology and innovation, anchored by global players like Google's Canadian headquarters and world-class institutions including the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, and Conestoga College's respected trades programs. From its earliest days as a farming and trade settlement to its current status as one of Canada's fastest-growing metropolitan areas, this region has always been built by people who value hard work, craftsmanship, and community.
